Trailborn Hotels & Resorts
Frequently Asked Questions
What to Expect at Trailborn
Trailborn is built around a simple idea: the best hotels don’t just sit near great places — they unlock them. Every property in our collection is in the heart of an iconic outdoor destination, and every detail (the room design, the programming, the food) is shaped by where we are. We’re not a template dropped into a landscape. We’re a product of it.
That said, we don’t think the outdoors requires roughing it. Our guests sleep well, eat well, and explore freely. When you’re at a Trailborn, the adventure is the point, and we take care of everything in between.
People who love being outside and want a place that matches that energy. Families looking for something more meaningful than a resort with a lazy river. Couples who want a basecamp with real style. Outdoor enthusiasts who want their accommodations to keep up with their itinerary. And locals who need a great spot for a Sunday dinner or a post-hike drink.
You don’t need to be a serious adventurer to stay with us. You just have to love a good story.
Start with the kind of landscape that’s calling you:
- Mountains & ski: Trailborn Jackson Hole puts you in the heart of Wyoming’s Tetons, with skiing, hiking, and the Ember Lily spa waiting after a long day out.
- Blue Ridge getaway: Trailborn Highlands is tucked into the North Carolina mountains, with wildflowers, waterfalls, and a Nordic spa worth the drive.
- Beach & surf: Trailborn Surf & Sound is built around the rhythm of Wrightsville Beach, coastal North Carolina at its most alive.
- National park basecamp: Trailborn Grand Canyon is a design-forward motor lodge on Route 66, an easy hop from the South Rim.
- Northern California coast: Trailborn Mendocino sits between redwoods and Pacific cliffs, quiet, dramatic, and exactly as far from everything as you need it to be.
Still not sure? Send us a note and we’ll help point you in the right direction.
Built for them, actually. Each property sits in a destination where kids can do real things: hike, surf, explore canyons, spot wildlife, learn something. Rooms are designed with families in mind, restaurants have menus that don’t talk down to younger diners, and the best part of every property is usually right outside the door. Trailborn is not a daycare. But it’s a genuinely great place to be a family.
It depends on where you’re headed, and that’s the point. At Trailborn Jackson Hole, it’s skiing, snowshoeing, and river adventures. At Trailborn Surf & Sound, it’s surf lessons, island hopping, and paddleboarding. At Trailborn Highlands, it’s waterfalls, mountain trails, and fly fishing. At Trailborn Grand Canyon, it’s one of the most spectacular landscapes on the planet. At Trailborn Mendocino, it’s coastal trails, tide pools, and star-filled nights.
Our team at each property is your best resource. They’ll point you to the right guide, the right trail, and the right time to be there. We also put together curated Field Guides for each destination, with insider tips and ready-made itineraries: Jackson Hole · Highlands · Surf & Sound · Mendocino · Grand Canyon. Outdoor excursions are bookable directly on each property’s page.
Each Trailborn restaurant is its own thing: locally inspired, stocked with the best regional ingredients we can find, and designed to fill a real void in the market. After a day outside, you shouldn’t have to drive somewhere to eat well. See all our restaurants and bars →
We run ongoing programming at each property: local makers, workshops, events, and activities that shift with the seasons. You might do pottery with a local artist, take a yoga class, catch live music at the bar, or find yourself learning what a mycologist actually is. No two stays feel exactly alike, and that’s intentional. Check each property’s page for current programming and upcoming events.
Seasonal Timing & Best Times to Visit
There’s no wrong answer, but there’s a better question: what kind of trip do you want? Each property has a personality that shifts with the seasons. A summer stay at Trailborn Surf & Sound is sun, surf, and salt air. A fall visit to Trailborn Highlands is fiery foliage and crisp mountain evenings. The destination shapes the calendar. See below for property-by-property guidance.
Jackson Hole has two distinct personalities, and both are worth the trip. Winter (December through March) is for skiing. Snow King is right out the door and Jackson Hole MountainResort is 20 minutes away. Old Timer restaurant & bar and the Ember Lily spa are waiting when you come in from the cold. Summer (June through September) is for hiking, wildlife watching, and long golden evenings in a place that genuinely earns the word “epic.” Shoulder seasons (April–May and October–November) are for guests who want a quieter pace and the full attention of the property team.
Fall is the main event. Peak foliage in the Blue Ridge Mountains (mid-October through early November) is something you plan your year around once you’ve seen it. Summer in Highlands is a genuine escape. As one of the highest-elevation towns east of the Rockies, the temperature is a revelation when the rest of the South is sweltering. Spring brings waterfalls and wildflowers. There’s always a reason to go.
Spring (March through May) and fall (September through November) are the sweet spots. Temperatures are right for hiking, the South Rim is fully accessible, and the crowds are more manageable than peak summer. Summer brings the classic national park rush and serious heat inside the canyon (doable, but plan your rim activities for early morning). Winter is its own reward: snow on the canyon rim is one of those views that stops people mid-sentence.
Summer (June through August) is peak season at Wrightsville Beach, with warm water, full beach energy, and the complete coastal experience. Fall is when returning guests often make their move: the ocean is still warm, the crowds have cleared out, and the beach starts to feel like yours. Spring is equally good shoulder-season territory for the same reasons.
Mendocino doesn’t follow the typical summer-is-best rule. The Northern California coastal fog rolls in through summer and makes for cool, atmospheric days. Beautiful, but worth knowing. Spring (March through May) brings wildflowers and dramatic weather. Fall (September through November) delivers the clearest skies, mildest temperatures, and the best light for long coastal walks. Winter is for people who love a dramatic, wind-lashed Pacific coast.
Every time. Shoulder seasons across the portfolio consistently deliver the most unhurried version of a Trailborn stay: fewer crowds, more access to the team, and a pace that lets the place itself come through more clearly. If you know a property well, or want to, that’s usually the best window.
For peak periods (Jackson Hole during ski season, Highlands during fall foliage, Surf & Sound in summer), booking two to three months ahead is smart if you have a specific week or room type in mind. Shoulder seasons offer more flexibility. For a special occasion, a group trip, or an experience you don’t want to miss, reach out early and we’ll help put it together right.
Booking, Service & Practical Questions
The best way is directly on trailborn.com, where you’ll see the full picture of available rooms, current offers, and packages. Booking direct means you’re talking to us rather than a third-party platform. If you have questions about a specific property, a group trip, or a special occasion, reach out and we’ll make sure you get it right.
Yes. We love a good gathering. Weddings, corporate retreats, milestone birthdays, family reunions: each property has its own character and the team to pull it off well. Learn more on our gatherings page, or reach out directly at howdy@trailborn.com to start the conversation.
The more we know, the better the trip. Dietary restrictions, a special occasion, activities you’re hoping to do, room preferences: all of it helps us set things up before you arrive rather than catching up after. Reach out to the property after booking, or add notes at the time of reservation.
Yes, and with care. Our kitchens are built around fresh, local, seasonal ingredients, which means our culinary teams work at a granular level and are used to adapting. Let us know before you arrive if you have restrictions or allergies (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, specific allergen needs) and we’ll make sure your experience at the table matches everything else about the stay.
Most of our properties welcome pets, at all locations except Trailborn Surf & Sound. Pet fees and weight restrictions apply and may vary by property, so confirm the details when you book. We’d rather know your dog is coming so we can set things up right.
Trailborn is a founding member of Marriott’s Outdoor Collection, which means Marriott Bonvoy members can earn and redeem points at our properties. If you’re a Bonvoy member, your status travels with you — into the mountains, down to the beach, and out to the canyon.
Keep Extraordinary is our commitment to the places we call home. A portion of every stay booked directly on trailborn.com goes to local land conservation efforts, and we design every hotel with sustainability at the front of every decision, because a hotel that depletes its location isn’t worth staying at.
